Truly Small Invoicing
Free invoice generator for small businesses, freelancers and startup. Invoices made easy!
OVERVIEW
Contractors, freelancers and digital professionals are just a few that make up a large segment of truly small businesses. The TrulySmall branding focuses mainly on solopreneurs and truly small business of 1-3 employees. For our initial release, we’ve decided to focus on a feature that is the most needed, which is sending out an invoice.
As the UX Lead of the TrulySmall Invoicing App, my goal of this project was to finalize the branding of TrulySmall and scope out the MVP of the Invoicing app. I collaborated closely with the development team to launch the project in Jan 2021.

The Problem
In a fiercely competitive industry we needed to be nimble and think hard about each feature we wanted to add, so we can launch quickly for Tax season and expand from there. This is how we started off with the Invoicing App.
PROCESS
Branding
For the TrulySmall product, I work alongside with an external brand designer and marketing coordinator to create the vision and meaning what we wanted the audience to view TrulySmall as.
Colour
For the colours of TrulySmall, the team and I discussed how we wanted our branding to be conveyed in our colours with growth of a business, starting off as a bud and blooming. Hence why our main colours are a dark brown instead of black and green to represent nature and a bud.
Characters
In order to make the branding feel more friendly, modern, yet approachable, we purchased a set of character and made some tweaks with the colours to fit with our branding. These characters are added to the website as well as within the Invoicing App.

Font
For the fonts, we were inspired by the character Wealthsimple and Hello Bonsai’s UI and branding was like. We like decided on rakkas to be the titles/headers to add some quirkiness to our site while Poppins is a very clean and cute like tone.

Getting my hands dirty with code
I used mustache to code the template of the invoices sent out from users to clients. Fortunately mustache is basic html and css. The small challenge I had with this was that Weasyprint which was the PDF compiler did not recognize flexbox so I had to figure out a different solution to layout parts of the invoice.

For now...
The TrulySmall Invoicing App has just launched. The team and I will be gathering more insights and feedback as more users start downloading the apps and when we analyze the data through Mixpanel.
